FAQ Overview

Licensing

With subscriptions do I need to enter a new key every 30 days?

No. While your subscription is active, the license key expiry date should be automatically extended for another 30 days once the subscription payment is received. Stock Portfolio Organizer will automatically try to re-authenticate your installed license key once it is expired thus getting the new expiry date.

I would like to move my license to a different computer. How do I do that?

You can move your license to a new computer once every 3 months by opening the license window and clicking 'Uninstall License'. If the operation was successful, you should be able to install your license on a different computer. Please note you need to be on-line for this operation to succeed.

User Interface

What is the best way to use Stock Portfolio Organizer on a small screen?

You can collapse the main navigation panel by clicking the little pin icon in its header. This will make the main navigation panel hidden by default and slide out when you hover your mouse over it. You can also collapse the top menu bar by clicking the little up- arrow found in the top right of the menu bar. This should maximize the available space for various views.

Data Feeds

Why doesn't ticker data update after setting up a Yahoo data feed?

There could be a few reasons for this:

  • Check to make sure that you are connected to the internet and that Stock Portfolio Organizer is allowed to access through any firewall. Next, check to see if there are any errors being generated by looking at the 'Data Feed Messages' panel. If there errors, please fix them and enable the data feed again if it was automatically disabled due to excess errors.
  • Yahoo determines which market a ticker symbol belongs to by its suffix. For example, 'BHP.AX' has the suffix '.AX' to denote the Australia Stock Exchange. So when setting up the data feed, you need to make sure the that you have the correct target market selected in the plugin settings window so the plugin knows what suffix to use when fetching data from Yahoo. The symbols in your database should not include any suffix.
  • Sometimes Yahoo uses a different symbol name to what is expected. In this case the only thing you can do is change the symbol name in the database to what Yahoo expects.
  • Lastly you may have requested too much data and your IP was temporarily banned. This can show up as 'unauthorized' errors in the 'Data Feed Messages' panel. It is recommended that you enable the 'Throttle Requests' option when setting up the data feed to prevent too many requests being sent to the yahoo servers.

Trade Entry

When adding a new trade, I'm asked to select a brokerage formula. Why do I need to select one when I add trade expenses manually?

In this case you can create an empty brokerage formula that does nothing and also make it default. That way it will be automatically selected each time.

Hi, I want to use the product to track futures and options traded on US exchanges as well as a few currencies. Does your software allow me to do that? Best, Andreas

Hello,

The product fully support futures but options only to an extent. If you wish to track options you will need to obtain the options contract symbol from yahoo finance and use that as the symbol when entering the trade. Enter the trade as a margin trade with 100% margin. To distinguish your option trades from other trades I suggest you assign the trade to an appropriate group 'Trade Group'. Hope that answers your question.

Miscellaneous

How can I use Stock Portfolio Organizer on more then one computer?

By default Stock Portfolio Organizer stores all the data in the '%programdata%\StockPortfolioOrganizer' folder of the current user. For example, on Windows 7 for this author that translates to 'C:\ProgramData\StockPortfolioOrganizer'. The best way to share this data across more than one computer is to store it on a USB drive. To do so you need to configure each computer to use the same drive letter for the USB when it is plugged in. If you don't know how to do that, the following guide should help 'making usb drive letters the same on all your computers'. Next, start Stock Portfolio Organizer and open the settings window. Now change the '%programdata%' portion of the 'Database Backup Directory' and 'Ticker Data Directory' paths to the letter of the USB drive such as 'F:'.

Is there a way to not show the users' window at startup?

Certainly. In the users' window select the user you always normally use and mark it default. Next, open the settings window and make sure that 'Open Default User on Startup' is ticked.

Hi, I want to use the product to track futures and options traded on US exchanges as well as a few currencies. Does your software allow me to do that? Best, Andreas

Hi Andreas,

Stock Portfolio Organizer was designed for the international market so you can definately use it for US Exchanges and different currencies.

The program natively support futures trades but not options. But you can still track options t as many of our users do. The only thing missing with options is you cannot enter an expiry date and if you exercise the option you cannot connect the option with the trade. To enter an option simply record them as normal trades but close them by setting the sell price to zero and assign them to a special trade group. For example, put your options in a group called 'Options' and if you exercise an option put the trade into a group called 'Exercised Options' to make it easier to calculate profit losses of your option trades.

Regards,
Paul

All Trades Views

If I have 2 separate accounts with different trades and open up the 'Currently Open Trades' view under 'All Trades', does it show me all the combined open trades in both accounts, or just the trades from the one account.

It will show the combined open trades for both accounts. If you wish to view the trades for each account separately, you can put the trades into two different 'Trade Groups'. You could then openĀ 'Currently Open Trades' for a desired trade group.
